The Doberman is a recognized German dog breed named after its breeder, Friedrich Louis Dobermann. It was bred as a house and farm dog, which means that the breed was intended to act as a guard dog that is also very obedient.
Therefore, they were also used as police dogs early on, which earned them the nickname “gendarme dog”. Even today it acts as a helper to the police and as an ambulance dog. The Doberman was bred mainly from a mixture of so-called butcher dogs, such as Rottweiler and German Shepherd.
Today, the Doberman is a dog breed recognized by the FCI. Through an amendment in November 2015, the Doberman received a new breed standard, which no longer provides for the docking of ears and tail.
